New Book: “Escaping the Dopaminferno” and Reimagining Books

Escaping the Dopaminferno – dopaminferno.com

Over the past year, Matt Gwyther and I have been tinkering away in the background! After we did our first dopamine detox we carried on reading, exploring, collecting quotes and tweets, following references, talking to people, taking their recommendations, watching talks and podcasts, making notes, etc etc.

And then …

We summarised everything we learnt and packaged it together into what could be described as an eBook.

But it’s also different to a traditional book in many ways and I think it brings in some innovative ideas as well as creativity.

Re-imagining a book

  • We started off by making the book free to read online.
  • There’s a paid offline download (which can be read on mobile and eReaders) which can be bought from Gumroad.
  • We used our own photography.
  • We experimented with AI art and created scenes and pictures based on the texts within the articles.
  • All the chapters are divided into self-contained articles which can be shared with others.
  • We’ve ensured that the articles answer questions in case others look for those questions.
  • There’s an option to join a community and ask questions so that it’s a live and interactive.
  • There are regular updates in the form of a twitter-like feed so that it’s a living document – the some core content remains static but there is also a reason to come back and see what’s new.
  • Anonymous tweets and famous quotes are seamlessly integrated. Mixing old wisdom with the unfiltered vernacular and honest outbursts from unknown people in a modern digital world.
  • There’s an option to join a newsletter and stay informed.
  • There are Easter egg style zones that you can enter where we create a digital nostalgic experience (mixing sound, poetry and AI Art) as an intermission to the reading experience.

What is the Dopaminferno?

It’s a combination of Dopamine and Inferno. It’s a playful title we discovered and we bought the domain name www.dopaminferno.com which redirects to the Gumroad link.

We’re hoping to create some stickers and stick them onto some bathroom toilets as our first advertising attempt! Whilst this is about technology, we’re unsure how fruitful a digital first marketing campaign will be in a cluttered ocean of advertisers, algorithms based on outrage virality and SEO click farms. We’ll start locally and take it from there!
